Lowest Obesity Rates In Canada

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, BC has the lowest instance of Obesity in Canada. That’s the good news. The bad news is that over 12% of British Columbians are obese.

Here are some interesting quotes for the CBC article where I learned of the report:

In 2000-2001, Canadians aged 12 or older from the highest income households were twice as likely to report being in excellent health than those in the lowest income households, the report said.

Men who earned the top 20 per cent of income were also about one-quarter less likely to die of heart disease than those in the lowest 20 per cent.

Over the past 20 years, rates of overweight and obesity have more than doubled for Canadian adults, and nearly tripled among Canadian children, based on self-reported data.

Additionally, the report recommends steps to prevent obesity, including encouraging breastfeeding. Apparantly, the longer a baby nurses, the lower the baby’s chance at developing childhood obesity.

In other news, Klaus has left Canada to work in England. If you’d like to keep up with what he’s doing, visit his new site, here. I’m sure he’ll have plenty of good stories for us.

  2. I’ve noted elsewhere that I’ve sat in the window of the Indigo Cafe at Eglinton and Yonge in Toronto and examined the many passers-by by for signs of obesity.

I found that while many people are in far from peak physical condition, few could be said to be obese.

So, I tend to think that Toronto is not a prime site of the reported obesity epidemic. And, I’m open to argument.

Headhunter, I believe you are right. Toronto is probably not a center of obesity, but I think that the problem can be more easily seen outside of the city. Vancouver is a fitness focussed place, but when you get out to the suburbs, you begin to see a difference. I think it has alot to do with lifestyles, especially with children.
